Background Info

The Plaza @ Truro originally opened in 1938 and was the premier venue for film-goers throughout its The opening period. Since then the premises have changed hands several times until it was purchased by WTW Cinemas in 1996. Following extensive refurbishment and reconstruction, The Plaza was re-opened to the public in July 1998.

In recent years the Plaza has been voted RAAM Independent Cinema of the year for 2006 and runner up in 2009.

The Cinema now boasts four screens, all of which offer state of the art sound and vision equipment. All screens have wheelchair access, screens one and four are on the first floor, accessible via a platform lift (weight limit applies), and screens two and three are on the ground floor.  Hearing loop systems and Dolby Screentalk are also available (check with the cinema for details). All auditoria are fully air conditioned.

All screens have traditional 35 mm projection, and screen two boasts a digital projector which has recently been modified to show 3D movies through the Real D 3D projection system. With the digital format becoming the norm the Plaza is, yet again, at the cutting edge of technology. With Hollywood steering towards a trend of 3D the Plaza is suitably placed to offer these movies in all their digital glory!

The Plaza has played host to many regional premiere’s, from leading studio’s pictures such as James Bond’s ‘Die Another Day’ to locally produced works too such as Mark Jenkin’s Midnight Drives. The Plaza will continue to be favored by all major film companies as the premier cinema in Cornwall .

The concessions counter offers a wide range of popcorn, drinks, ices and other confectionary.

We hope to welcome you to The Plaza, as we have done so with so many other patrons during our time at Truro .
