A new state-of-the-art cinema is beginning to take shape in St. Austell as part of the £75 million town centre regeneration scheme.

Foundation stones are being laid and work has already begun.

Last month, the old cinema was bulldozed and the new four-screen cinema will be created on the north side of Aylmer Square.

Film fans will be able to take their seats for the first time towards the end of next year if all goes according to plan.

More that £31 million of the regeneration scheme is being paid for by the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA).

The remainder of the funding is coming from David McLean Developments.

Once the final touches have been put to the new cinema, it will be handed back to the owners, WTW Cinemas, to complete the interior.

David Williams, of WTW Cinemas in St. Austell, said "I am delighted with the progress on the building so far and we are eagerly awaiting the cinema's completion next year so that we are able to open again to the people of St. Austell."

"I'm confident that we will be able to offer some of the best films around in a comfortable, contemporary and stylish environment."

Ian Whale, Cornwall regeneration manager for the RDA said: "In 2008, St. Austell will have a brand new cinema which will mark the completion of the first stage of this exciting project to regenerate the town centre.

Up to 200 people will be employed during the construction phase.

"The RDA will ensure that local materials and labour are used whenever possible."

"At the moment, the foundations are being completed and the construction of a wall for the main car park is now under way."

Sir Robert McAlpine is the main contractor for the scheme.

Bryan Trethewey, project manager for the company said: "White River Place is starting to take shape and the start of the new cinema is a positive step forward for St. Austell."

"The development will benefit the town hugely and has been planned to incorporate facilities for both business and leisure."

The scheme is expected to be completed in 2009.
