Work has officially started this week on the construction of Newquay’s new multi-screen cinema.  WTW Cinemas, which is developing the new cinema complex at the site of the former Vic Bars in Crantock Street, joined construction services company ISG Pearce and architects NBDA Ltd in holding an official ‘ground-breaking ceremony’ to mark the start of construction work on Wednesday 19 May.  The event was attended by newly-elected Liberal Democrat MP for St. Austell and Newquay Steve Gilbert who used a silver shovel to lift the first soil.

The new cinema, which has yet to be named, is being prepared for opening in time for the summer season of 2011, sixteen years after the last cinema in the town closed.  It will have in excess of 600 seats across four screens and will feature the latest in cinema technology.

David Williams, Managing Director of independent family business WTW which owns three other cinemas in St Austell, Truro and Wadebridge said:  “We are delighted to be celebrating the start of construction work on Newquay’s new cinema complex.  Our team of designers and architects will be looking to bring the latest ideas in the cinema industry to make this a venue that the town and surrounding area will be proud of.

“There is a huge amount of work to be done but we have been greatly encouraged by the very positive help and response we have received from the people and authorities in Newquay.

“Cinema is one of the best value entertainment experiences and we will certainly be encouraging families to visit.  We believe the new cinema complex will be a definite draw and offer a great deal to the town.” he concluded.

Paul Hogan regional manager of ISG Pearce and head of the company’s Exeter office, commented: “It is a privilege for our team to be involved in the construction of a cinema complex which will no doubt bring huge enjoyment to the local community.

“Our work starts this week and we will be busy up until Christmas working to create the shell of what is set to be an impressive three-story building, before handing over for internal fit-out to take place.”

ISG Pearce is one of the largest construction companies operating across the South West and South Wales and specialises in retail, industrial, education, leisure, commercial, residential, affordable housing, defence and health sector projects
