The long awaited construction of the new multi-screen cinema for Newquay has moved a step forward with the announcement from WTW Cinemas that work on the site of the former Vic Bars in Crantock Street will commence from Monday May 17th. WTW Cinemas Managing Director David Williams stated ‘We are delighted to be able to announce that ISG Pearce Construction of Exeter have been appointed as main contractors for the shell construction of Newquay’s new cinema complex. They have a proven track record of delivering leisure developments such as this. The main shell construction will take place throughout this year, before the internal ‘fit-out’ in the spring of next, leading to an opening of the new cinema in time for the summer season of 2011.’ The new cinema, which has yet to be named, will have in excess of 600 seats across four screens and will feature the latest in cinema technology. Mr. Williams continued ‘Our team of designers and architects will be looking to bring the latest ideas in the cinema industry to make the new Newquay Cinema a venue that the town and surrounding area will be proud of. There is a huge amount of work to be done but we have been greatly encouraged by the very positive help and response we have received from the people and authorities in Newquay.’ It has been fifteen years since Newquay last had a cinema, at one time the town had three, The Astor, The Camelot and The Victoria, upon which the new development is being built. Mr. Williams concluded ‘Cinema is one of the best value entertainment experiences and we will certainly be encouraging families to visit. We believe the new cinema complex will be a definite draw and offer a great deal to the town.’ An official ‘ground-breaking’ ceremony to mark the commencement of the construction will take place on the site in Crantock Street on Wednesday May 19th at 11:00 am.
