The big screen experience is to return to Newquay, which has been without a cinema for the past twelve years, with Cornwall based WTW Cinemas announcing plans to build a brand new four screen complex on the site of the former Vic Bars in Crantock Street. David Williams of WTW Cinemas stated "WTW Cinemas are delighted to be able to confirm the freehold purchase of the Vic Bars in Newquay from the St Austell Brewery Company. The planned development of the site will see the current building being demolished and replaced with a four-screen cinema which will be one of the most modern in the South West". WTW Cinemas are the Westcountry's longest established Cinema operators and have owned cinemas in Cornwall for many years. They currently operate The Regal in Wadebridge, The Cinedrome Padstow and The Plaza at Truro. The company are also scheduled to open the new four-screen complex at the White River Place shopping centre in St. Austell in late Autumn this year, having previously operated The Filmcentre and Capitol cinemas in the town. The Plaza at Truro won the UK RAAM Independent Cinema of the Year award in 2006. Mr. Williams continued "We are greatly looking forward to screening the latest releases in this excellent location. The cinema will be very much family orientated and we know from our research that a cinema in eagerly wanted in Newquay for both local inhabitants and visitors. There are exciting times ahead in this development and we are looking forward to being part of the town's future". Newquay has been without a cinema since 1995 when the Camelot (now the Walkabout Bar) closed its doors for the final time. The town at one time had three cinemas, The Camelot, The Victoria and The Astor. The announcement of a brand new multiplex will delight local movie lovers and visitors to the town and area. |
