That's All Folks!!! It will be the end of an era in St. Austell on Thursday August 23rd 2007, when The FilmCentre Cinema closes its doors for the final time to make way for the regeneration of the town centre. Originally opened as The Odeon on Saturday July 11th 1936, the cinema has provided continuous entertainment for over 71 years to generations of cinema-goers. The present owners 'WTW Cinemas', who have operated the cinema for the past 29 years, have revealed that in excess of 15 million people have attended the cinema since its doors were opened for the first time. Thursday's 'Last Picture Shows' will include a special charity screening of the Peter Sellers and Margaret Rutherford comedy ' The Smallest Show On Earth', with tickets now available from the box office at £4.00 each. A fireworks display at approximately 9:45pm will bring an end to the day and mark the end of the life of the cinema. A new four-screen state of the art cinema complex is to be built as part of the regeneration programme for St. Austell. David Williams, Managing Director of WTW Cinemas commented "We are extremely proud to have brought the magic of big-screen entertainment to the people of St. Austell for so many years. We would especially like to thank all the many loyal customers and members of staff who have made our period of operation so enjoyable. We now look forward to opening a new site in the regenerated town centre, and firmly believe that the regeneration will be of huge eventual benefit to the area."
